It’s autumn in McCormick County, and it’s time to add a little bit of western South Carolina fall color to your yard.
The annual Fall Plant Sale at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Agriculture is coming up on Friday, October 21 from 9 a.m. to noon and on Sunday afternoon, October 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the school’s annual Howe-lloween Festival. The public is invited to visit the campus and shop for plants grown by students from the Governor’s School for Agriculture horticulture classes.
“We get excited about being able to grow some plants and have some fall color when there’s not that much fall color going on around,” said agriculture teacher Rodney Mann with a chuckle. “We get mums in. We get pansies in, and we do some ornamental cabbage. We’re also growing pecans here on the campus and going out and harvesting those.”
The students will offer Swaggie and Monster Swaggie garden mums in 1-pound and 3-pound pots that they have grown from cuttings. Blue and yellow pansies will be available in 4-inch and 6-inch varieties will be offered, along with 18-count flats. Other fall farm offerings for sale will include straw bales, corn fodder shocks and pumpkins in various sizes.
The proceeds from the Fall Plant Sale at the Governor’s School for Agriculture are used to support FFA programs and other student agricultural activities. The sale on Friday will be during regular school hours, so visitors will need to check in at the welcome center at the front gate prior to entering campus.
The second day of the plant sale Sunday afternoon will coincide with the school’s annual Howe-lloween Festival, when the public is invited to participate in a trunk-or-treat event featuring live entertainment, a petting zoo and more fall-themed activities.
