CATTLE OPERATIONS

The JDLH Farm is home to a collection of beef cattle.

The cow herd at the SCGSA is mainly composed of Registered Polled Herefords.  We also have some Black Baldie cattle that are Hereford/ Angus cross.  Many of our brood cows and replacement heifers were bred by artificial insemination to both Black and Red Angus bulls.  Last year, Country Boy Farms provided a nice Registered Red Angus bull for cleanup.

The main goal of our herd is to produce high quality individuals that can be used as both replacements in our breeding program and feeder cattle that supply our cafeteria with beef.  As with everything on our Farm, the cow herd is also used as a tool to educate students about raising beef and the importance of management, herd health, breeding and our environmental impact responsibility throughout the process.

Many head of cattle call the John de la Howe campus home.

It's always a good time when it's feeding time for the cows.

Circling up for some fresh hay, the cows at John de la Howe feast.
