SC Governor's School for Agriculture at John de la Howe
Located in McCormick, South Carolina, the John de la Howe campus is nestled in the heart of the Sumter National Forest. The campus is minutes away from Lake Thurmond, Hickory Knob State Resort Park, Savannah Lakes, and great golf courses.
With 1,310 acres of forests and farmland, the school is a working farm that supports the agricultural mission of the state agency. The farm is composed of a herd of registered Polled Herefords, a cow and calf operation, hogs, goats, horses, pastures, and managed forestry plots, as well as natural areas, wilderness areas with wildlife, pecan groves, crops, and a greenhouse operation.
Directions
From Columbia, S.C:
Take Highway 378 West to McCormick. At the second traffic light, take a right onto Highway 28 heading North. At approximately two miles the road will fork, follow Highway 28 (to the left towards Abbeville). Proceed six miles until you cross the Long Cane Creek Bridge, and the road will fork. Follow Highway 81 (to the left toward Mt. Carmel). Two miles down the road you will note the entrance to the school is on the left, proceed through the entranceway until you come to the John C. Shiflet Center Building on the right (3 story granite building with parking).
From Greenville, SC:
Follow Highway 25 South to Greenwood, SC. At the intersection of Highway 25 and Highway 72, take a right heading towards Abbeville, SC. Proceed through Abbeville until you reach Highway 28 South. Take a left on Highway 28 South towards McCormick. At approximately 15 miles to your right, you will note a “small” convenience store, B & B Grocery. Approximately 1 1/2 miles South of B & B Grocery, you will come to an intersection with a small country road. At the intersection, bear to your right on to Richey Road and follow signs towards John de la Howe School and Hickory Knob State Park. When you come to the stop sign, the entrance to the school will be straight across the road.
